Alice Chops the Suey Review

Alice Chops the Suey Review

Alice Chops the Suey is a 1925 animated short film from the Alice Comedies series. It’s a dated short.

Alice is kidnapped by Chinese gangsters and brought to Chinatown. Her cat tries to rescue her, but then they’re hunted by a bunch of angry Chinese Triad members. This is actually one of the better Alice shorts as it’s among the most inventive cartoons of the bunch. It’s not original as there have been shorts with this subject before, but that first act was so fantastic, artistic and very memorable.

It’s a shame, then, that the rest of the movie succumbed to the standard cartoon shenanigans with the chase overtaking the narrative to the point of exhaustion. Alice is also almost absent here and the racism of the film is evident throughout. But it’s so well animated and fun that I ended up liking it quite a bit regardless.

Alice Chops the Suey has a problematic second half, but the first half is terrific and quite artistic.

My Rating – 3.8
