The Screwball Review

The Screwball Review

The Screwball is a 1943 animated short film from the Woody Woodpecker series. It is a pretty weak flick.

This is a baseball cartoon. Needless to say, I did not care for it. There has always been an abundance of these sports cartoons, but baseball is the most boring sport of the bunch, so their insistence to make it the prime candidate for animation was always baffling to me. The animation is fine and Woody is a lot of fun, but that’s pretty much it here.

The Screwball failed to engage me throughout. While I did appreciate those initial stadium gags, the field gags were quite inferior and forgettable. The ending is also uninspired. It’s a perfectly serviceable short, but one where Woody did not get to be as funny as he usually is.

The Screwball is well animated, but mostly a tedious baseball cartoon with no particularly memorable gags in it.

My Rating – 3.3
