Get a Horse! ReviewGet a Horse! Review

Get a Horse! is a 2013 Mickey Mouse short film. It is the most recent flick from this series and a very strong return.

First and foremost, I first saw this movie accompanying ‘Frozen’ in theaters and then I found it overrated and not particularly good. I’ve changed my mind for the second viewing as now I find it very good, if still not great. It’s one of the better shorts in the series for sure. So basically they set out and made a late 1920s Mickey Mouse short all with the archival voices from Walt Disney and others. It was a brilliant idea that worked splendidly.

That black-and-white animation is gorgeous and very faithful to the films that it honors. But then it jumps to CGI animation which is also very good. Pete kidnaps Minnie and Mickey ends up from the other side of the screen in the theater with the audiences and has to get back to save her. The animation works both as modern and old-fashioned and the score is excellent throughout. The movie’s authentic and that idea worked really well as it led to a lot of inventive action from time to time, but still the movie is overwhelmed with action, it needed a longer runtime and it felt gimmicky a bit too much.

Get a Horse! is very authentic in its approach and ultimately it works as it’s a lot of fun and at times even brilliant, but also a bit gimmicky and frenetic.

My Rating – 4.1
