Mickey Mouse in the Riddle of the Red Hat Review

Mickey Mouse in the Riddle of the Red Hat is a Disney comic that was published in 1945 under the Four Color Comics label. It’s a pretty good issue.

The Riddle of the Red Hat is the weakest story in this issue. It may be the story represented on the title of this issue, but it’s just your standard crime story where through misunderstanding Mickey and Minnie are involved. The two have a lovely dynamic, but otherwise I didn’t care for this one.

Pluto the Hero is a Pluto story that is all about his misadventures that are a pain for Mickey to solve. It’s a very entertaining and charming story that was slight, but overall very endearing. It’s a short story, but one where Pluto’s cuteness made it difficult not to like it.

Goofy’s Orphans is by far the best of these three stories. It is all about Goofy’s quest to help these poor orphan skunk kids. It’s such a wonderful story that deals with a difficult subject matter, but in a way that is accessible to kids. Mickey is great here, but it is Goofy who is the star and his big heart touched me here.

Overall, Mickey Mouse in the Riddle of the Red Hat is a very well illustrated Mickey Mouse issue that features one great story, but the other two stories are inferior and far from memorable. It’s an uneven issue, but it’s worth reading for that terrific third story alone.

My Rating – 3.7
