Bambi Meets Godzilla Review

Bambi Meets Godzilla is a 1969 animated short student film created by Marv Newland.

The movie sees Bambi grazing on the grass peacefully when suddenly comes in Godzilla’s foot and stomps on the poor guy to death. That’s it. This movie runs at around one and a half minutes and it has no plot to it whatsoever. It’s just this unexpected death that comes as a shock and that makes the movie stand out, but otherwise it’s far from great. The animation is black-and-white and very limited in movements, but the score is classical and well used.

Marv Newland made this short all by himself and somehow due to its black absurdist humor it is regarded as a classic of animation. I personally disagree with this sentiment, especially as it regards its themes, which are all made-up. The monster standing for limited animation crushing the deer standing for Disney? Come on, this is all typical bullshit that those who want to find something where there is nothing would make up. With that being said, I much preferred the credits over the big stomping as it was quiet funny how Newland made fun of himself by adding so many credits for such a short film (the wardrobe nod was hilarious).

Bambi Meets Godzilla is an overly short, slight movie that is overrated, but the credits are quite funny and it’s definitely memorable.
