Ninety-Five Senses Review

Ninety-Five Senses Review

Ninety-Five Senses is a 2023 animated short film directed by Jared and Jerusha Hess.

This movie is an ode to the body’s five senses delivered by a man with little time left to enjoy them. It’s a story that throughout its thirteen minutes changes from lighthearted, heartwarming and positive to utterly devastating and heartbreaking. It’s, thus, an all-encompassing movie that depicts life in all of its facets.

The animation is very strong, elegant and particularly lively in its movements. The narration from Tim Blake Nelson is fantastic with his Southern accent being amusing and tender. There is so much heart and warmth to be found in this story that is in essence an uplifting one despite its very sad ending. It teaches us to fully appreciate the entire human experience in all of its senses and enjoyments. Not all of the physical senses and not all revelations were given proper time to cook, but largely the movie succeeded in what it sought to do.

Ninety-Five Senses is one of the best animated shorts of the year due to its strong animation, lovely narration and a story that is both uplifting and heartbreaking.

My Rating – 4.5
