Top Ten Most Anticipated Films of 2024

2023 was a solid year for movies, but hopefully 2024 turns out better. While the former had a terrible streak of blockbusters, this year will prove to be quite strong in terms of big-budget genre fare. There are still a handful of interesting smaller movies being released this year, but it is the genre films that pique my interest the most. Here are ten most anticipated films of 2024.

10. Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga

The tenth placement goes to this ‘Fury Road’ prequel. We’ve recently seen the release of its first trailer and it was actually very exciting. Anya Taylor-Joy is a terrific actress and I am excited to see her in this great role. Hopefully the movie will be as fun and as technically arresting as its predecessor and not just a cash grab prequel.

9. Sonic the Hedgehog 3

The first Sonic movie was pretty solid, but the second one was so good and incredibly entertaining. It was one of the most unexpected recent hits. The third movie also saw the release of its first trailer a month ago and it looked excellent. This remains one of the most dependable game to movie series out there.

8. Deadpool 3

‘Deadpool’ is one of my favorite superhero movies and the sequel was just as good. But it’s been years since we last saw this character, so I cannot wait to finally revisit this hilarious superhero comedy franchise that will undoubtedly have a lot to say about the current mediocre state of comic book movies.

7. Maxxxine

Ti West directed both ‘X’ and ‘Pearl’ in 2022 in a tremendous filmmaking feat. Both movies were among the best horror flicks released that year. Maxxxine is a sequel to the former and it will be interesting to see where the franchise goes next, especially thematically. If done right, this will be one of the best horror trilogies of all time.

6. A Quiet Place: Day One

I actually really enjoyed the second movie in this series, though it obviously paled in comparison to the classic original. The third entry is apparently an origin story and I cannot be more excited as it will be fascinating to see how these aliens arrived on the planet and what the invasion looked like in those first days. I have all faith in the world it will be another great entry.

5. Joker: Folie a Deux

‘Joker’ is not a great movie as it was very much a rehash of Scorsese’s ‘Taxi Driver’, but it was so well made and undeniably influential on pop culture. I am excited for the sequel because it’s going to be an entirely different story, including the change in genre from crime to musical. Joker and Harley are perfect fit for a deranged musical, so this project will be difficult to derail.

4. Nosferatu

Robert Eggers is one of the best directors that we have right now. I admired all of his movies released up until this point in his career and there is no doubt in my mind that his next one will also be great. He is a great fit for this brand and it’s been a long time since we’ve seen any versions of Nosferatu, so I am excited to see what he does with the material.

3. Dune: Part Two

This movie was on my last year’s most anticipated films list, but it unfortunately got delayed, so we are going to finally see it this spring. I will be there in the theater for sure. The first ‘Dune’ was phenomenal and it would be my first pick had it not been for the fact that this is the less interesting part of this story. But I still expect to have so much fun watching it.

2. Alien: Romulus

Not a lot is known about this particular movie, but I am still putting it this high on my list as I am a huge fan of this franchise. I even liked the last movie that most hated. There is only one caveat here and that is the fact that Disney now owns this IP, but this will quite probably still remain adult, mature and as violent as before, so fingers crossed that the story is also great.

1. Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes

Just as the above entry, the Apes franchise is also now under Disney, but I am confident that they won’t ruin the franchise given that the trailer for this movie was absolutely superb. It looked super promising in its visuals, epic nature to the story and an intriguing premise. This is one of my favorite franchises of all time and I have faith that this will be another classic in this amazing series.

Honorable Mentions:

Beetlejuice 2Tim Burton can be hit-or-miss lately, but ‘Beetlejuice’ was one of his early greats, so the prospects of a sequel under his helm are quite promising.

Inside Out 2‘Inside Out’ is one of the best Pixar movies of all time and the sequel could be great too. I just have doubt about it as the original story concluded so well.

Mean Girls – This will be a musical take on ‘Mean Girls’ and hopefully an updated take on the story. The trailer looked pretty good, so we will have to wait and see if the movie itself delivers.
