The Night of the Living Duck Review

The Night of the Living Duck is a 1988 animated short film from the Merrie Melodies series.

After indulging in horror comic book reading, Daffy has a dream where he is singing in a nightclub for monsters. This movie was a downgrade in comparison to its much better predecessor. It has its moments, but the plot was too slight this time around. The film basically acts as an homage to all these different classic monster characters, but the monsters failed to be memorable themselves.

The comic book framing device worked and it was quite charming. The animation is also excellent. I loved the designs of the characters too. Daffy Duck himself is quite good here. Mel Blanc’s health was sadly declining at this point, so Daffy’s voice ended up being too different here, but at least the characterization remained on point. The song that the duck sings is a lot of fun, but it was still rather odd to see him singing at any capacity.

The Night of the Living Duck is a stylish short with great animation and a solid Daffy, but the plot was slim and the singing section was odd.

My Rating – 3.9
