Heaven Scent Review

Heaven Scent Review

Heaven Scent is a 1956 animated short film from the Merry Melodies series. It is a solid, but not great short.

On the French Riviera, a female cat is frightened by sudden outbursts of barking by every dog around her. So, to scare them away, she paints her back with a white stripe like that of a skunk. The dogs run away, But she doesn’t receive the peace she’d expected, because Pepe Le Pew sees her, thinks she’s a girl skunk, and tries to make love to her. This is a familiar premise, but it’s elevated by a great beginning.

It was different to include those dogs and the entire opening was excellent. I wished for the rest to be as memorable, but unfortunately the cartoon then became standard fare. Pepe is great himself, but we have seen him in more amusing scenarios over the years with these here being only okay. The animation is reliably strong, though.

Heaven Scent is rather forgettable, but it is elevated by a great and different opening scene.

My Rating – 3.6
