Gonzales’ Tamales Review

Gonzales’ Tamales Review

Gonzales’ Tamales is a 1957 animated short film from the Looney Tunes series. It is an incredibly funny cartoon.

The mice in the village are angered that Speedy Gonzales takes all the girls for himself, so they bring Sylvester the cat to get rid of him. Of course, he fails spectacularly through a series of amusing gags. The only issue here is that the short is too, well, short. It should have been longer and it felt somewhat rushed. But other than that, this movie truly is terrific and one of the funniest Looney Tunes from this period.

Sylvester being paired with Speedy was an ingenious idea that was superbly executed. That entire final stretch was the highlight as it was gloriously orchestrated. The doll idea worked actually for the cat, but then he got to eat the peppers, which was so dumb on his part, and that scene was hilarious. The funniest part then came when he was blasted into the air and one of the funniest Superman references ever done was introduced to us. The use of the word gringo was hysterical to me.

Speedy Gonzales has rarely been as funny as he was in Gonzales’ Tamales, a movie that is gloriously orchestrated in its final third.

My Rating – 4.5
