D’ Fightin’ Ones Review

D’ Fightin’ Ones is a 1961 animated short film from the Merry Melodies series. It is a solid, but far from amazing short.

Hector and Sylvester are both shackled together when they escape heading to the dog pound, but they find it difficult to evade danger while tied together. This is basically a parody of ‘The Defiant Ones’, one of the greatest movies from the late fifties. I love the movie, but I don’t find the premise suitable for a Warner Bros. short.

They picked two great characters to be stuck together, but still Clyde the cat would have been even better than Hector. And why would the cat be going to a dog pound is beyond me. The movie is lacking in truly memorable set pieces as it mostly just mimics that iconic film, though it does execute action well, it is pleasantly goofy throughout and the animation is stellar.

D’ Fightin’ Ones isn’t quite successful as a parody short. It’s fun, very well animated and at times quite well executed, but it lacked stronger humor overall.

My Rating – 3.8
