Alice Hunting in Africa Review

Alice Hunting in Africa Review

Alice Hunting in Africa is a 1924 animated short film from the Alice Comedies series. It’s a dated short.

Alice and Julius go on a safari in Africa to hunt wild game in this very dated, horribly violent short where they kill off innocent animals without a second thought. This movie reminded me unpleasantly of ‘Tintin in the Congo’, which was the worst installment in that comic book series. Apparently, people back in the twenties loved to dream about killing wildlife, which from today’s viewpoint seems like lunacy.

Alice Hunting in Africa had been lost for quite a while before being rediscovered recently and it’s one of those movies that could have remained lost and nobody would mind it. The surviving print is rather rough and unpolished, but the movie at least was shorter than most entries and more engaging. It was well made and it must have been fun back in 1924, but today it’s too antiquated.

Alice Hunting in Africa is an antiquated cartoon that was well made, but dated and offensive in its depictions of violent killings of animals.

My Rating – 3
