Alice Cans the Cannibals Review

Alice Cans the Cannibals Review

Alice Cans the Cannibals is a 1925 animated short film from the Alice Comedies series. It’s a dated short.

Alice and her cat are driving along the coast when they accidentally ride off a cliff and into the ocean. They trick a fish into towing them along until a storm hits and they are swept away to the Cannibal Islands where they are pursued aggressively by the locals. This movie was ultimately better than the previous adventure in Africa, but it’s still deeply problematic today.

What was this obsession of Americans with cannibalism during this time period about? They’ve made so many of these cartoons about cannibals in remote islands, which is crazy to see from a modern perspective. The movie itself is not horrible as it featured actually surprisingly strong animation, a great use of exclamation points to replace dialogue and a couple of okay gags, but for the most part Alice and Julius were forgettable here.

Alice Cans the Cannibals is just as problematic as its terrible title would suggest. It’s a well made, but weakly plotted movie. The series did not enter the year of 1925 in a good way at all.

My Rating – 3.1
