A Scent of the Matterhorn Review

A Scent of the Matterhorn is a 1961 animated short film from the Looney Tunes series. It is a very amusing short.

Pepe Le Pew spots the girl cat with the painted stripe, thinks she’s a female skunk, and tries to romance her. When she smells Pepe’s stench, she runs away, and he chases her up a mountain in the French Alps. The setting of this movie is absolutely gorgeous and perfect for this particular series. It was used gloriously not just for some great gags, but also wonderful visuals.

The animation is polished and frequently even stunning here, especially the icy vistas. The second half is excellent and the ending itself is your typically sly Pepe finale that really works. My only issue here is that the plot is very familiar for the series, which led to the first half being rather uninspired. It was well executed, but it could have been more original nonetheless.

A Scent of the Matterhorn is unoriginal, but the gorgeous vistas and a terrific ending make it worth a watch alone.

My Rating – 4
