22 vs. Earth Review

22 vs. Earth Review

22 vs. Earth is a 2021 animated short film produced by Pixar. It is surprisingly quite disappointing.

Set before the events of Pixar’s ‘Soul’, 22 refuses to go to Earth, enlisting a gang of five other new souls in her attempt at rebellion. It was a great idea to focus on 22 as a character having in mind that the original movie really wasn’t about her, but she remained this very intriguing figure who needed a backstory. We finally get one here and it is pretty good, though still more could have been done with it.

While everything here rang true and the whole enlisting process and loneliness of 22 did explain her attitudes in the first movie, the ending itself was overly ambiguous and the movie not answering any questions about the meaning of life was fine, but it could have delved deeper into this topic as the original film did. The short is gorgeously animated and scored, but more kid-friendly and less sophisticated this time around.

22 vs. Earth has strong technical aspects and a solid story, but it is much less sophisticated and too inconsequential in comparison to its predecessor.

My Rating – 3.9
