Zula Hula Review

Zula Hula Review

Zula Hula is a 1937 animated short film from the Betty Boop series. It is a pretty racist, but fun cartoon.

Disabled in a thunderstorm, Betty Boop and Grampy’s plane lands on a tropic island where Grampy soon re-invents the comforts of home until hostile natives intrude. This is an extremely racist movie that is among the worst in this series. Basically, black people here are portrayed as being the same as monkeys with the only marked difference being the absence of a tail.

Zula Hula was still not bad because it had Grampy in it. Betty’s dynamic with him was infectiously dynamic and the two were so much fun together. The highlight was the score as it was very lively and just a whole lot of fun. It’s a shame that the movie was so racist as otherwise it would have been pretty good.

Zula Hula is an energetic and lively short that would have been much better had it not been so dated.

My Rating – 3.3
