The film is about Tommy Wiseau and it especially concerns his friendship with Greg Sestero as well as the creation of an iconic bad movie ‘The Room’. Now obviously the film has very limited appeal as it is only suited to appeal to those familiar with this film and those who haven’t seen it will mostly be lost which is a problem.

But for those like myself who have prepared previously, the film is very good and worth watching for sure. It doesn’t ever go as deep as I wanted it to go in terms of emotion and exploration of its themes, but it still gives us a story unlike your usual Hollywood story about filmmaking.

It follows an untalented man who is rejected by everyone in Los Angeles. It shows us how difficult it is to have talent and succeed in this business and how heartbreaking it can be for those who do not succeed. I also liked a lot how they touched upon his mysterious background as his age, nationality and how he got such enormous amounts of money remain a mystery to us all. Thus the film has a very intriguing, mysterious side to it.

Tommy Wiseau is a very odd, interesting and even fascinating person. The film showcases how his got famous and how ‘The Room’ is such a special, hilarious movie despite or maybe because it is so terrible. It is a movie that truly became iconic for all the wrong reasons which is interesting and it thus makes its creator a fascinating figure very well portrayed here.

James Franco gave a terrific performance here. He basically became Tommy Wiseau and the amount of evident care that he put into his performance is to be applauded. His mannerisms, his speech and emotion are all very well conveyed leading to a shamefully Oscar snubbed work.

Dave Franco is also very good in the role of Greg Sestero and I just loved the interactions between the two. Their friendship is very strong and nice to witness. As for the other characters, they are all not particularly important, but I liked each and every performance from these actors with Seth Rogen being the highlight in a rare serious role for him. After ‘Steve Jobs’ and this film, he truly showed us all that he is a very good actor.

The Disaster Artist is not particularly well paced and rarely truly deep. The highlights include the ending and especially those comedy scenes with the making of the film. Those scenes took too much screen time but they were very funny and sometimes even hilarious so it was worth it.

James Franco excelled in the directing chair as well. His work here is splendid and he truly adapted this book so well while making the film very entertaining to watch but also not too weird or crazy and just right. The attention to detail in particular is worth congratulating everyone on this filmmaking team as they recreated the scenes from ‘The Room’ flawlessly as evidenced by the credits which put the two movies side by side and the results are remarkable.

The Disaster Artist is not as deep or as thematically rich as it should have been plus it has very limited appeal as it requires homework on the viewers’ part, but for those who had previously seen ‘The Room’, it proves to be one very entertaining experience. The film is very funny in its look at the filmmaking scenes with those scenes being flawlessly recreated owing to an immaculate attention to detail, but it is also a moving, very interesting look into Tommy Wiseau’s life, the mysteries surrounding him and his great friendship with Greg Sestero. James Franco excelled here in both directing and acting roles.
