The Room Movie Review

The Room is a 2003 drama film written, directed and acted by Tommy Wiseau. It is an iconic terrible movie for all the good reasons.

Now this film is not to be mistaken with 2015’s ‘Room’ which is one of the best films of all time whereas this movie is one of the worst. It entirely deserves its reputation as it truly is terrible while also being very entertaining to watch. I usually do not like to watch bad movies and make fun of them, but here I enjoyed that experience quite a bit.

The entire story here is basically this – Wiseau plays Johnny whom everyone likes a lot for some reason and his girlfriend Lisa cheats on him and eventually leaves him which leads to his suicide. Needless to say, this slight plot was extended to ninety minutes unreasonably and what we got was around 20 minutes of plot and the rest was basically pointless filler which did not influence the main story at all.

Why everyone likes Johnny is never established and the protagonist himself is an oddity of a character – underwritten and just silly. Mark is a non-entity and of course Lisa is horrible. The movie is actually very sexist in its portrayal of women as her mother basically admits that life of comfort without love is what every girl should strive for and of course Lisa is a terrible human being. It is not sexist in an offending way, but mostly in a laughable manner.

The acting in The Room truly is horrible. The women weren’t as atrocious, but the men… oh the men are just ridiculously bad. Greg Sestero and Scott Holmes are horrible, but Tommy Wiseau is easily the worst actor here. His way of delivery is so funny, his accent as well and he is just so cringey to watch that I was embarrassed for himself. And that is why this movie is rightfully famous – his performance is so terrible that it becomes hilarious to follow, even more so when you witness how obviously clueless he is about his lack of talent.

The Room is terribly directed by Wiseau and he is literally the sole person responsible for the failures of this film as he also wrote the script which is horrible. Not only is the story pointless and stupid, but the film also infamously has a bunch of scenes that make no sense and are never resolved at all leading to a mess of a film which flows oddly and doesn’t even resemble a proper film.

It was weird watching the film as it is so inept in all the filmmaking areas while also being incredibly amateurish in terms of cinematography and score too. The sex scenes are basically soft pornography with no point to them whatsoever. Also the dialogue is so laughably bad and couple that with terrible delivery from its actors and you’ve got many lines that are bound to make you laugh.

So I have to say that I’ve had a good time watching this film. It truly is funny to watch as it is the kind of film where absolutely everything went wrong and you start to wonder why these people ever set out to make a film and how are they so clueless about themselves.

With horrible dialogue, absolutely atrocious writing, a very sexist portrayal of women and containing many scenes that make no sense at all and are never resolved in any meaningful way, The Room truly is as bad as its reputation is. The acting is simply horrible and especially Tommy Wiseau himself gave such a ridiculously clueless, hilarious performance. This movie is spectacularly awful in every single aspect, but it is undeniably entertaining to watch and laugh at its innumerable failures.
