Succession Season 2 Review

The second season of Succession was released in 2019. Once again, it consists of ten episodes and most are great in what is a definite improvement upon its predecessor.

Succession Season 2 Review

Let’s talk about all of these terrible people and what happened to them in this great season. First off, Kendall. The rise and fall of this man was very quick and brutal. Following his near-death experience, he is now firmly in his father’s claws. This changed the dynamic between the two, but it also led to such a touching, heartbreaking season for Kendall, especially the first half where he was clearly a broken man. Jeremy Strong’s performance is simply amazing and in my opinion he is the MVP of the entire show. The most emotional scene of the whole series was his moment with Shiv where the two hugged. That was devastating.

As for Shiv, her arc is excellent here. Rhea is such an unlikable woman and how she screwed her over was a welcome call for Shiv who thinks that she is smarter than she is. Her drive to become the next in line after her dad to run the business led to her being probably the most important character of the second season and some of her goals were admirable, but she remains a cold-hearted politician nonetheless.

That final episode is absolutely fantastic throughout, but one of the best, most heartbreaking scenes was the one where she and Tom finally broke up. Tom became more likable throughout this season and I was rooting for him to leave Shiv as their relationship is beyond toxic and horrible for him in particular. The way she treated him was always terrible and I am glad that he finally left her.

Succession Season 2 Review

The show continues to be a drama first and foremost, but one with strong comedic beats in almost every episode. Of course, Greg and Tom continue to be the comic reliefs of the series and they are again hilarious. Most of their exchanges were so entertaining and they’d really become friends by now.

Roman is in my opinion the most insufferable member of this unlikable family. He is just a bad human being, but throughout this season it was very entertaining following his interactions with Gerri with their crazy sexual scenes being absolutely hilarious in their insanity. I liked her a lot, but I continue to find Marcia way too underdeveloped as a character. She needs more screen time than just a couple of jabs at Logan here and there. Speaking of Logan, he is a cold, very off-putting man and thus an incredibly realistic figure, but seeing some of his human side near the end of this season was quite welcome. Connor himself is still silly and unimportant.

The second season of Succession continues this unrealistic trend of almost every episode containing some huge plot development such as twists, turns and changes in dynamic. Though that made all episodes hugely entertaining to watch, it was at times too much as sometimes the episodes needed a bit of a breathing room.

Succession Season 2 Review

The finale is amazing, but the Roys meeting the Pierces was also a stellar episode as I just love all the times when this family has to be on their toes. This entire season is at its best when being unpredictable and crazy and I loved every second of it. It explores many sides of running a huge business and is very believable in all of its running themes.

Due to excellent acting performances and stellar dialogue, Succession continues to be one truly fantastic show about business that is bound to make everybody entertained due to its many twists and turns. The second season is even better than the first thanks to a couple of brilliant episodes and many moving moments and high stakes throughout.

Worst Episodes: Vaulter and Dundee.

Best Episodes: Tern Haven, Return and This Is Not for Tears.

My Rating – 4.3
