Planet of the Apes Review

Planet of the Apes is a 1974 science fiction television series that was first broadcast on CBS. It was based on the Apes movies of the seventies and it was quite disappointing.

These humans are dangerous,

don’t you understand that?

They think that they’re

as good as we are!

I am a big fan of this franchise, but unfortunately the television treatment that it received wasn’t great. The animated series was very problematic and this one is as well, though I prefer it over the animated one as it is overall more polished and better crafted.

I liked Virdon and Burke, the two human protagonists of the show. Their dynamic was fun and they worked as the central human characters. Urko and the famous Zaius are the most memorable Ape characters and the Apes were for the most part complex and very well developed. The acting is fine, though nothing great by any stretch of the imagination.

This Planet of the Apes series is also solidly shot and made, but clearly the lack of VFX budget led to many filler-like episodes that were a chore to sit through. The one with the sharks was silly and the farming one was the worst and very boring.

Whenever the two societies clashed and we got to see what the Apes don’t know about humans was the highlight. Undoubtedly these thematically rich storylines that center on science and politics are always the best, but unfortunately this show only centered around those from time to time as most of its fourteen episodes were quite forgettable and overlong.

The Planet of the Apes live-action show from the seventies has its merits such as solid characterization and some very interesting episodes, but most are unfortunately filler-like in their forgettable, uninteresting storylines.

Worst Episodes: The Surgeon and Horse Race.

Best Episodes: Escape from Tomorrow and The Liberator.

My Rating – 3.4
