So Does an Automobile Review

So Does an Automobile is a 1939 animated short film from the Betty Boop series. It is a pretty solid cartoon.

Betty operates an auto repair garage for sick and injured automobiles. Betty sings as she restores broken-down taxicabs, high-price limousines and restores a police car with sore and flat feet (tires) back to perfect condition again. This is a pleasantly old-fashioned cartoon that reminded me of those earlier Betty Boop shorts that relied on high concepts and crazy physics-related gags.

The movie is very well animated and seeing all those cars have human illnesses led to some inventive and memorable scenarios. The problem with the movie is that Betty herself was once again forgettable and the gags pretty much became stale and tired after a while. The score is strong, but the film needed to have been funnier overall.

So Does an Automobile has its issues, but it’s an old-fashioned Betty Boop short that works due to a solid premise and strong animation.

My Rating – 3.6
