Silo Review

Silo is a 2023 dystopian science fiction drama series that premiered its first season on Apple TV+. It’s a solid, but disappointing genre show.

In a dystopian future where a community exists in a giant silo that extends hundreds of stories underground, 10,000 people live in a society bound by regulations they believe are meant to protect them. This show started off great with an intriguing setup and it was full of questions that I wanted to see answered soon.

Unfortunately, the questions were only somewhat answered in the final episode, which was another highlight of the season. The beginning and the ending were so incredible and so memorable that it’s a shame that the rest of the season suffered in comparison.

Silo should best be described as a drama with dystopian SF elements. It can also be viewed as a conspiracy thriller as those vibes and tones were evident throughout. The mysteries piled on top of one another to the point that the show started bursting at the seams.

It was great seeing David Oyelowo here and he was quite good. Rashida Jones was also solid. But this is above all else Rebecca Ferguson’s show and she got to shine in the best written role of the bunch. She delivered a terrific performance as the proactive heroine of the story and it’s a shame that others could never quite match her energy.

Silo was obviously made on the cheap as it lacked the thrills and memorable imagery and technical aspects that a bigger budget could have provided. The pacing is too slow as the season could never quite garner momentum with way too many convoluted plot points and mysterious developments included.

Overall, I liked Silo for what it is, but I expected so much more from this show that is above all else a thriller drama with very little SF in it. The beginning and the ending were terrific, but the large middle section was slow and it seriously lacked in momentum and energy.

Worst Episodes: The Flamekeepers and Hanna.

Best Episodes: Freedom Day and Outside.

My Rating – 3.5
