Elite Season 7 Review

The seventh season of Elite was released on Netflix in 2023 and it contains ten episodes. It is the weakest season of this show so far.

This is the first season of this show that isn’t framed by a murder mystery, thus the series lost its identity. Yes, the previous season was framed with Ivan’s accident and not murder, but it still had those flash-forward scenes that led to the finale where we saw the accident. This time around that structure was entirely abandoned in favor of a straightforward soap opera with only one murder scene in the final episode.

Let’s talk about the characters and touch upon their arcs during this lackluster season. They returned Omar to the show for this season and it was a terrible choice that did not pay off. He was so whiny throughout this season that it was difficult to root for him. He was pathetic and annoying, constantly getting himself hurt by others.

I hated that triangle between Omar, Joel and Ivan. Joel is an insufferable character whom I despised as he was deeply selfish and plain unlikable. As for Ivan, I strongly disliked his romance with Joel that made no sense and was abruptly started while his other storyline with his newfound mother and sister was beyond soapy and ridiculous. Ivan was just a victim this time around where they piled so many bad developments on him.

But speaking of his mother and sister, these two characters are excellent and this seventh season is only worth watching for the two. Maribel Verdu was a phenomenal get for Elite and she delivered a typically superb performance as this complex, but badass mother who would stop at nothing to protect her daughter. Her killing Raul made for the most memorable scene of the season, though that final twist where she was filmed was annoying. The incest scene with Ivan was horrendous, but other than that, I loved Carmen.

Chloe is the heart of the season and by far the most fascinating character of the bunch. Through her, the show depicted the many problems that stem from a promiscuous lifestyle and how dehumanizing this can be to a person, especially a woman. Her relationship with her mother is turbulent and well explored while both of her relationships in this season were rushed, but undeniably memorable and juicy. Mirela Balic was quite memorable in a very physical and complex role.

Sara finally ended things with Raul, who was killed off by Carmen in that unforgettable scene in the finale that was by far the best episode of the season as is always the case for Elite. Their abusive relationship should have ended much sooner, but Raul’s manipulations still proved to be wildly entertaining.

Luis is this detective who was very forgettable and pointless. Eric is a new character, a guy who has addiction issues. His storyline was actually well handled and not too rushed as many others were in this season, but the show sidelined Nico way too much by basically delegating him to the role of a caring cousin and nothing more. As for Didac and Isadora, their crime arc was quite mediocre and boring. It was such a shame to see Isadora get straddled with such an uninteresting storyline.

Overall, the seventh season of Elite is the weakest one so far. It has two great characters in the form of Chloe and Carmen and their storyline was a lot of fun, but others were either forgettable or annoying with Omar and his arc faring the worst. Too many plot points this time around happened with no reason or too abruptly due to very lazy writing. It’s a season that also did not include any mystery, which was a bad choice that did not pay off.

Worst Episodes: Las Encinas and Protocolo.

Best Episodes: Solo abrazame and Voy a acabar con esto para siempre.

My Rating – 3.4
