More Pep Review

More Pep Review

More Pep is a 1936 animated short film from the Betty Boop series. It is an imaginative short.

Betty Boop invents a pep formula to speed up lazy Pudgy, but it escapes into the real world with rapid results. This movie pretty much functions as a drugged-up, trippy trip where everything and everybody becomes sped up and the results are disorienting animated as well as live-action segments. It’s not the most inspired premise, but the movie was executed in an imaginative way for sure.

Pudgy is very funny here. He just wants to sleep and can’t be bothered with his tasks. Betty is sweet and fun too while Max Fleischer himself gets a speaking role. The scenes where he draws the characters and the scenery were the highlights. The movie was too fast in the third act, but undeniably memorable and unique in that effect.

More Pep has a somewhat familiar premise, but the execution is strong. The animation and live-action are so well mixed here and Pudgy himself stole the show.

My Rating – 3.7
