Made in Abyss Season 2 Review

The second season of Made in Abyss premiered in 2022 and it consisted of 12 episodes. It is less interesting than the first one, though it’s still quite strong.

Riko and Reg continue their exploration of this crazy world here, but this sophomore season was mostly not as concerned with the adventurous elements as the original one. Gone was the spirited adventure in favor of building its world and lore to the minutest detail for better and for worse.

I did miss those adventurous elements as the first season was engaging, fun and very old-fashioned in that classic adventure mode, but the second season deserves props for actually developing its characters more and for introducing interesting new personalities, creatures and ideas into the mix.

Nanachi is the new addition and to me she was a bit too over-the-top for this particular show, but ultimately she worked as she was well developed and quite memorable in design and behavior. Riko and Reg are great once again while the highlights were all the various creatures that we meet. The more grotesque body horror elements were by far the highlights here.

Made in Abyss is best seen subbed as the dub version is frustratingly amateurish and just plain terrible. The subbed version is excellent as the voice acting there was superb. The animation is certainly polished, colorful and beautiful to watch while the score, sound and directing were all pretty solid too.

The world building and strangeness continue to be the highlights of this show, but a lack of emotional levity, strong themes and interesting character arcs hurt it in the long run. The first season was definitely a bit better and more adventurous, but this second one is worth seeing for its world, characters and interesting tonal shifts.

Worst Episodes: The Compass Pointed to the Darkness and Friend.

Best Episodes: The Luring and All That You Gather.

My Rating – 4
