Spy x Family Season 2 Review

The second season of Spy x Family premiered in 2023. It consists of 12 episodes. It has its great moments, but is mostly inferior to its stellar predecessor.

The first season of this anime spy comedy was an irreverent breath of fresh air in 2022 and it ranked among the year’s best new anime series. This sophomore season, however, failed to compete with the original, resulting in a solid, but forgettable outing.

Spy x Family Season 2 Review

My main issue with this season is the first half that was forgettable, uninspired and failing to capitalize on the success of the first season. The show is at its best when it is concerned with one or two main storylines in one episode, but the first half of the season included disparate stories in each and every episode, seriously resembling filler at times.

Thankfully, the second season became much better, even going to become genuinely great in the last four episodes. The last episode with Bond was my favorite as this lovable goofball continues to be adorable and this episode was both funny and immensely charming.

Anya is once again a scene-stealer. She is hilarious in all of her schemes and silly inner monologues that are always over-the-top and very amusing. She is so much fun, in fact, that I could just watch an Anya show in its entirety.

But Loid and Yor were unfortunately quite sidelined in this season, which is a shame as I really like both of them. The family dynamic was also lost here as the characters were separated way too often, resulting in uneven episodes that lacked the magic of the original. The show is technically very well made and as funny and as sophisticated as always, but it needed better structure and pacing.

The second season of Spy x Family is somewhat disappointing. It has its terrific episodes, especially toward the end. Anya continues to shine as the show’s best and funniest creation. However, the first half of this batch of episodes was far from great and the show separated its characters way too often, resulting in a solid, but uneven season.

Worst Episodes: Episode 2 and Episode 3.

Best Episodes: Episode 10 and Episode 12.

My Rating – 3.9
