Inception Movie Review

Inception is a 2010 science fiction action film directed by Christopher Nolan and starring Leonardo DiCaprio, Joseph Gordon-Levitt and Ellen Page. It’s just a bad movie.

It follows a professional thief who steals information by infiltrating the subconscious, and is offered a chance to have his criminal history erased as payment for the implantation of another person’s idea into a target’s subconscious. Maybe this premise sounds cool on the paper, but in execution the story is so bad, annoying and stupid.

South Park’s parody of Inception in their 14th season said it best – it’s crazy, stupid and pretentious. I love science fiction movies and I love dreams too, but this movie squandered on both of those premises. The entire dream logic here is flawed, albeit sound in some smaller areas, and simply the convoluted narrative really angered me as it felt pretentious, frustrating to follow and most of its plot points were too ludicrous to work even in this genre.

This film has a terrific ensemble cast, but all of them are wasted on these either dull or very unlikable characters. DiCaprio himself is boring and bland whereas Ellen Page is underutilized and the same goes for Levitt’s character. And the less said about the others, the better as they are all incredibly forgettable.

Inception looks cool, I will give Nolan that. Some of those scenes are instantly memorable such as walking on the ceiling, but again they felt silly and not explained enough. The entire movie is like that. The dialogue is also extremely pretentious to the point of becoming insufferable throughout its runtime which is also overlong. The VFX and score are good, but everything else is mediocre, including Nolan’s weak direction.

Needless to say, this is Nolan’s worst and most frustrating movie. And that says a lot. It’s one of the most overrated films from this entire decade and one that simply did not deserve eight Oscar nominations. Those technical nominations are fine, but the screenplay one is atrocious having in mind that is this film’s biggest weakness.

Though it looks and sounds good, Inception is otherwise bad in every other aspect. The ensemble cast is excellent, but they are all wasted on bland or unlikable characters. The dialogue is insufferable as the entire movie is very pretentious plus rather difficult to follow as it’s so needlessly convoluted. It’s also silly and too implausible even for the SF genre. This is Nolan’s most annoying movie (and that says a lot) while it’s one of the decade’s most overrated movies as most people love it for unbeknownst reasons to me.

My Rating – 2
