Hawaiian Aye Aye Review

Hawaiian Aye Aye Review

Hawaiian Aye Aye is a 1964 animated short film from the Merry Melodies series. It is a very good short.

Tweety Bird is on vacation in Hawaii with his mistress, Granny. Sylvester spots Tweety and tries to reach him in his cage, which is guarded by Granny’s pet shark named Sharkey. Sharkey keeps foiling Sylvester’s plans. The animation in this short is very pleasing to the eye and the Hawaiian setting is well put to use. Most of Sylvester’s plans are what you would expect to see in a short like this, meaning that they’re quite familiar and repetitive.

But the addition of a shark made the short more unique. It’s oddly designed, but fitting the Looney Tunes animation style. Granny should have gotten more screen time, but Tweety got a couple of very amusing lines of dialogue and Sylvester is his usual clumsy self. The final sequence was very fun. This is the last Tweety appearance in a classic Looney Tunes short sadly, but he at least left on a high note.

Hawaiian Aye Aye is uneven, but it’s mostly a very good short that saw a solid farewell to the Tweety character.

My Rating – 4
