DC League of Super-Pets is a 2022 animated superhero comedy film directed by Jared Stern for Warner Animation Group. It’s not a great movie by any means.

Krypto the Super-Dog and Superman are inseparable best friends, sharing the same superpowers and fighting crime side by side in Metropolis. However, Krypto must master his own powers for a rescue mission when Superman is kidnapped. The premise of superheroes having their own superpowered pets was fine, but ultimately the movie proved to be too similar to ‘The Secret Life of Pets’ and nowhere near as funny as it thinks it is.

When it comes to the characters, Krypto and Ace are too forgettable as protagonists of the tale, though the voice acting from Dwayne Johnson and Kevin Hart respectively was quite good and they have solid chemistry. Lulu played by Kate McKinnon was memorable, but a typically over-the-top villain nonetheless. Others are all forgettable while the human characters were both weakly designed and not well developed at all.

DC League of Super-Pets has humor that is at times adult, but overall it relied way too heavily on the toiler humor jokes that did not appeal to me whatsoever. Some of the lines were amusing, but for the most part I found the humor barely serviceable. There were too many familiar pet  owner jokes that simply did not land.

When it comes to the animation, it is also far from great. The designs of the pets are fine, but the humans not so much as they vary wildly in their quality. The overall CGI here is just okay with no artistic touches whatsoever. The directing, editing and the overall storytelling are all barebones, though the dialogue can be clever at times. The movie was surprisingly strongly reviewed by most major critics, but in my eyes it’s far from the best that animated comedies have to offer and its superhero angle was very uninspired to me.

DC League of Super-Pets is a serviceable animated comedy that has a couple of fine jokes, some memorable characters and solid dialogue, but for the most part the humor settled on being overly juvenile while most of the characters were thinly written and/or forgettable. The overall storyline is too familiar and predictable to make a bigger impact as well.

My Rating – 3
