Boop-Oop-a-Doop Review

Boop-Oop-a-Doop Review

Boop-Oop-a-Doop is a 1932 animated short film from the Talkartoons series.

Betty is working in a circus, but her boss is harassing her. This just might be the first Talkartoons film to have Betty as the protagonist. The circus setting is familiar and Bimbo is sidelined with his gag feeling repetitious, but Koko the Clown got to be the hero in the third act, which was refreshing.

The highlight is obviously Betty herself. She sings a song about not wanting to lose her virginity through very risqué and almost too obvious lyrics. The villain is genuinely creepy and dangerous and the scenes between the two were so memorable. This is a rare Talkartoons short that genuinely felt like a later Betty Boop short and I just loved the score and humor here.

Boop-Oop-a-Doop is a terrific Talkartoons short that featured the best use of Betty Boop in the series yet. It has a familiar setting that is so well utilized and a very memorable villain.

My Rating – 4.2
