Bell Hoppy ReviewBell Hoppy Review

Bell Hoppy is a 1954 animated short film from the Merry Melodies series. It is an odd short.

Sylvester and a bunch of other cats try to bell this large mouse who is of course Hippety Hopper. Apparently, belling is putting a bell on the largest animal, a practice coming from the Middle Ages. Incorporating that odd, ancient practice was definitely strange, but it also led to a couple of very fun scenes.

The entirety of the ending is very strong, especially for finally making Sylvester emerge somewhat unscathed, but the alley cats got ran over by a truck and that was hilarious. The action is solid here and Sylvester being a leader was an interesting new dynamic for him, but Hippety is underused himself.

Bell Hoppy is an odd in plot film, but it definitely worked out in a couple of very fun and funny scenes.

My Rating – 3.7
