All the Money in the World Movie Review

All the Money in the World is a 2017 crime film directed by Ridley Scott and starring Michelle Williams and Christopher Plummer. It’s an expectedly weak, uneven film.

This is a very powerful, true life story that should have led to a thought-provoking, sophisticated film about the power and dangers of money. However, this movie never took any action when it comes to its themes as it doesn’t explore them and it barely even touches upon them.

What is left is one very straightforward crime flick which unfortunately focuses on the crime element of this story first and foremost, but it shifts tones and dramas way too frequently resulting in those thriller and dramatic elements being underutilized.

This is a very politically charged film when it comes to the awards circuit. Because Kevin Spacey was replaced and they had to quickly shoot the scenes with their new actor Christopher Plummer, he thus got an Oscar nomination for a performance that is definitely good, but hardly Oscar-worthy. It’s a travesty that he was nominated over Patrick Stewart for his powerhouse turn in ‘Logan’.

Michelle Williams is actually more memorable in this film than Plummer is and she should have gotten much more praise for her starring, very well acted role. She delivered in emotion and is the most memorable thing about the entire flick.

All The Money in the World has one major problem and that is the direction from Ridley Scott which is very directionless, odd and scrapped together poorly. It is obvious that this movie was put together hastily and his direction is so weak that it hurts the film. He doesn’t know what to say, he never had a strong goal for the film and thus the whole affair is messy.

The cinematography is very weak also. The film is so grainy looking, so dull in color and so grey that it really took me out of it. The film definitely has a solid first half and some very memorable, striking scenes, but the crime elements are forgettable and of course not my cup of tea.

All the Money in the World is an expectedly weak film which was obviously hastily put together and rushed with such weak directing from Ridley Scott. It has its powerful sequences and the story is fascinating, but the film never explored any of its interesting themes at all, the shifts in genre approach are not handled well and the crime elements are overemphasized. Michelle Williams is actually much more memorable here than Christopher Plummer whose Oscar nomination is purely political and ludicrous.

My Rating – 3
