Alice’s Day at Sea Review

Alice’s Day at Sea is a 1924 animated short film from the Alice Comedies series. It’s a lovely short.

Alice’s trip to the sea inspires her to dream of a visit to an animated underwater world. This was the second entry in the series and another enjoyable romp. It is so wonderful witnessing Walt already honing his skills as a masterful storyteller in 1924. There is a sense of great flow, undeniable charm and a lot of personality to this short that made it timeless.

The only issue is that the live-action segment here was actually better than the animated one. Some gags with the fish were fine and I liked their designs, but I would have gone without those gags about land animals in fish form. The fish and octopus hunting Alice was the highlight, but Alice herself wasn’t as well incorporated into the scenery as she was in the predecessor. But the segment on the beach was wonderful with the captain character being quite endearing and the dog driving Alice to the beach was the best and funniest moment in the movie.

Alice’s Day at Sea is uneven, but wholly entertaining and charming with the live-action segment being particularly strong this time around.

My Rating – 4.1
