A Taste of Catnip Review

A Taste of Catnip Review

A Taste of Catnip is a 1966 animated short film from the Merry Melodies series. It is a fine short.

Daffy Duck goes to a doctor after he realizes that he is starting to act like a cat. Daffy finds himself drinking milk out of saucers. This movie is actually much better than most other shorts released during this period and it capped off this terrible year for the series in at least solid manner. The ending is quite bad with Speedy suddenly appearing. It was unfunny and just mediocre.

But the rest of the cartoon fared much better. This is one of those movies that focus heavily on Daffy’s narration to strong results. His lisp and panicky mode are always highly amusing to follow and here that suspenseful, psychological approach made wonders for his character. The doctor needed more screen time, but the flashback structure worked and the movie was at least mostly diverting.

A Taste of Catnip has a bad ending, but otherwise this was a surprisingly solid late Merry Melodies short with a greatly utilized Daffy.

My Rating – 3.4
