Yellowjackets Review

Yellowjackets is a psychological drama television series that premiered its first season on Showtime. It is such an annoying show.

Following these soccer team teenage girls who end up stranded on an island, the series heavily tries to be the next ‘Lord of the Flies’ with a more nasty, modern edge, but it fails miserably at that. The result is a show that is never at all smart, though it thinks it is rather clever, but the reality is the opposite. It focuses too much on violence and shock value without ever focusing on telling a really great story.

The first season has ten episodes and they felt like a chore to sit through. As a result, I won’t continue with this series as there is nothing for me here. I guess I do get what others are seeing and liking here, but in my opinion the series is just weak overall. It isn’t bad per say, but it is far from good also.

The actresses all did a very good job. Melanie Lynskey in particular stole the show. I could not say anything bad about these ladies as they are all strong, but the characters that they play left me cold and uninterested and even frustrated. I get that it’s realistic, but only to a degree as it’s the most extreme depiction of the horrible nature of teenage girls’ behavior.

Teenage girls are difficult to stand in reality, but here in this exaggerated manner they were even more insufferable. I needed at least some positive characters to counteract all the horrible ones for me, but that never happened unfortunately, leaving me disliking them way too much.

The first episode was so good and intriguing that the rest fell flat pretty quickly. Yellowjackets also tried too heavily to have both the past and present function well, but unfortunately neither parts of the story were all that great. The present scenes were forgettable while the past scenes were more entertaining, though very unsympathetic in characters and overbearing in violence and aggression.

Overall, I did not care for Yellowjackets. It is very well made and acted, but the unlikable characters and a frustrating storytelling structure as well as too much violence made the show difficult to sit through. It both bored and annoyed me to no end.

Worst Episodes: No Compass and Flight of the Bumblebee.

Best Episodes: Pilot and Bear Down.

My Rating – 3.2
