X-Men Season 3 Review

The third season of X-Men is pretty much on par with the previous season. It has its weaker episodes and continues to be rushed, but it has a bunch of very strong installments.

Out of the Past Part 1 and Part 2 are both very good installments of one very interesting storyline which involves Wolverine confronting his previous girlfriend Yuriko who’s now a full-on villain. It has a number of terrific action set pieces.

This season tackled the most famous X-Men story which is of course Phoenix Saga. They mostly did a very good job with this story as they thankfully split it into many more parts then the usual two and thus it gets developed properly. However, none of the parts are as fantastic as this great story demanded.

Part 1 as well as Part 2 are solid as build up whereas Part 3 and Part 4 feature standout action and are overall somewhat bombastic, but highly entertaining. Part 5, however, is the weakest as it is way too bombastic and not as emotional of a conclusion as the plot sorely needed.

Savage Land, Strange Heart Part 1 and Part 2 are both pretty uninteresting, somewhat bland episodes as this story focusing on Storm and Sauron definitely felt like a detour to me. The Dark Phoenix Saga is another important saga and the continuation of the previous big saga and everything I said before also applies here. It’s a good arc which could have been great but ended up being just good. Part 3 and Part 4 are just solid, but Part 1 and Part 2 are admittedly quite strong.

Cold Comfort focuses on Iceman who has never been a particularly interesting character and thus this episode is one of the weakest of the entire season. Orphan’s End is a good showcase on Cyclops with some strong family drama to it.

The Juggernaut Returns definitely is silly in its titular character, but still another strong family drama with him being Xavier’s brother and all. Nightcrawler is another very good episode which introduces us confidently with Nightcrawler through one strong storyline. Weapon X, Lies, and Video Tape makes use of Sabretooth so well along with adamantium in one strong, emotionally charged thriller.

Overall, this season suffered from the lack of any truly great episodes, but it does have a lot of very good installments and a couple of iconic storylines leading to a solid, though admittedly far from truly accomplished season.

Worst Episodes: Obsession and Cold Comfort.

Best Episodes: Out of the Past Part 2 and Nightcrawler.

My Rating – 3.9
