When My Ship Comes In Review

When My Ship Comes In is a 1934 animated short film from the Betty Boop series. It is a slight, but very charming flick.

Betty Boop wins the Irish Sweepstakes and fantasizes about what she’ll do with the money. Highly similar to ‘Betty Boop for President’, this short isn’t original at all and it is very simplistic in its premise, but the execution is terrific, so it still ended up being a delight.

Betty in this movie proved the she is an innocent, lovely human being that cares for others and their happiness. She even tries to bring the Great Depression to its demise. This type of story should have ended with a twist that it was all a dream, but still the majority of the short worked, especially those inventive visual gags with the animals and all the money and how it’s put to use. The gag with the old maid’s house was the funniest and most adult one.

When My Ship Comes In is a wonderful Betty Boop short that is familiar and slight in its premise, but it’s so amusing, charming and benefiting from numerous delightful visual gags.

My Rating – 3.8
