The Beach Nut Review

The Beach Nut Review

The Beach Nut is a 1944 animated short film from the Woody Woodpecker series. It is a very good short.

Wally decides to go to the beach to relax for his day off, but is constantly disturbed by surfer Woody. This movie introduced us to one of Woody’s most prominent antagonists, Wally Walrus. And I instantly liked the character. He is a perfect foil for Woody as somebody who isn’t easily beaten, and sure enough the ending sees Woody being pursued by Wally amusingly so. His design is strong too.

The movie is very well animated and quite atmospheric. There is a sense of moody, almost artistic atmosphere here that wasn’t present in previous shorts, but was very much present here. It made for a strange cartoon in imagery and tone, but it ultimately worked as the two had a strong dynamic. It isn’t a particularly funny short, but it’s so well made nonetheless.

The Beach Nut is a pretty solid introduction to Wally Walrus. It’s a well animated, atmospheric short that was very effective in the central dynamic.

My Rating – 4
