Vice Movie Review

Vice is a 2018 biographical film directed by Adam McKay and starring Christian Bale, Amy Adams and Sam Rockwell. It’s one very weak, rather unprofessional propaganda movie.

It follows Dick Cheney from an obviously leftist perspective and the film is one very one-sided, very manipulative piece of filmmaking which is also extremely condescending toward this man to the point of making him a cartoony joke. He did not feel like a genuine human being to me.

Even worse is George W. Bush who’s also a caricature and maybe he was like that in real life too, I don’t know, but to me he seemed way too silly. I found Lynne herself forgettable and the rest of the characters don’t really matter.

As for the acting itself, yes, all three of these great actors gave pretty solid performances across the board. Sam Rockwell is the more forgettable one. I love him a lot, but here he played a thankless role. A thankless role is Amy Adams’ one too, but she made the most of it with a pretty good acting job.

Christian Bale himself is solid, but offering nothing particularly remarkable and this is another make-up rich nomination of which I do not approve at all. I also do not approve of the nomination for Rockwell and only Adams maybe deserved her nom, but just maybe.

Vice has a fine first act with the rise to Cheney’s power being well showcased, but everything that came after it was a collapsing mess of a movie with too many interviews, an overly documentarian or mockumentarian approach to it and those forced, unfunny and obvious Adam McKay touches which were more annoying than anything else.

His movies to me are mostly overrated and especially the Oscar-nominated ones. This is a boring, unsophisticated giant mess and it was even worse than ‘The Big Short’ which at least had that novelty factor to it which this one doesn’t have. Its win for make-up over ‘Border’ is ludicrous. The director, editing and screenplay nods are all horrible and of course this is one of the worst Best Picture nominees in recent memory.

Vice is one of the worst Best Picture nominees in recent memory. ‘The Big Short’ at least had that novelty factor to it, but this one is even worse than that very weak movie. Yes, the first act is fine and acting’s pretty good, but not Oscar-worthy by any stretch of imagination. The script is horrible, the movie’s one-sided, unsophisticated and simply unfunny in its dialogue and many gimmicks that the director constantly throws at the audience very unsuccessfully. Adam McKay really is a terrible director and I hope the Academy will realize that some day.

My Rating – 2.5
