Top Ten Most Anticipated Films of 2020

2020 is going to be a much more interesting year than 2019. Disney is not going to dominate as much, and they are going to introduce more original endeavors instead of just sequels. This is why I am quite excited for this year and I am looking forward to all of these movies, whether they are old favorites or new materials.

10. Onward

Pixar is having not one, but two movies this year, and both are original. After a decade filled with more sequels than originals, I am more than happy to see them return to authentic storytelling. The trailers did not excite me too much as I can see their by now standard emotional manipulation creeping in, but the world-building is very promising.

9. Birds of Prey

Featuring an openly gay villain, a good cast and of course the return of Margot Robbie’s Harley Quinn, Birds of Prey is poised to be one of the most entertaining flicks of the year. Yes, DCEU doesn’t have the best track record with team movies, but this one is looking more and more promising with every new promotional material.

8. Artemis Fowl

First and foremost, I haven’t read any of these famous books. But I am planning to as I am genuinely intrigued by the concept and its fantasy world. The trailer for this one did not look all that great, but still it’s a famous source material and it has fine people behind it, so I am quite confident that we are going to finally get a new fantasy movie franchise.

7. In the Heights

In the Heights follows a Dominican neighborhood in Washington, and it is being directed by John Chu. It is based on Lin-Manuel Miranda’s eponymous Broadway musical, so I do expect at least great music from it. Judging by the trailer, it is off to a great, very entertaining start. Let’s hope that it reignites this flailing genre.

6. Death on the Nile

Kenneth Branagh did such a good job on ‘Murder on the Orient Express’ that I am quite excited for this next Agatha Christie project for him. I found the previous movie very underrated, and this one could be just as good as this is one of her most famous novels. Everything sounds promising here, I am just looking forward to seeing the first trailer for now.

5. A Quiet Place Part II

‘A Quiet Place’ was undeniably one of the best films of 2018. Coming two years afterward, this sequel is less likely to be as great as the original, but I would be happy for it to at least be good. The trailer recently came out and it was actually excellent. So yes, though at first skeptical, I am now quite hopeful for this sequel.

4. Raya and the Last Dragon

Raya and the Last Dragon is the first original Disney project since 2016’s ‘Moana’. Needless to say, I am pumped for it. The concept art came out last year and it looked absolutely stunning. If done right, this may turn out to be another blockbuster hit for them, and another original epic fantasy feature that I’m probably gonna eat up.

3. The Eternals

Yes, an MCU film actually got this high of a placement from me, and that is not difficult to understand why. The Eternals is first and foremost a new, original IP for the studio, but it also sounds so much like ‘Guardians of the Galaxy’ which I adore, and it is set to feature a whole new, fun cast of characters, plus it is set in space. What is not to love here?

2. Mulan

This is another unexpected choice as per usual I really do not hold this much hope for Disney live-action remakes, but this Mulan is looking amazing in its fantastic trailers. Finally, they found a way to honor the original while changing it quite a lot in order to make it more serious and different. The end result is looking to be a mature, epic war saga drenched in Chinese mythology.

1. Dune

Undoubtedly my most anticipated film of 2020 is the new Dune. Dennis Villeneuve is the director, and that alone gets my hopes dangerously high. He is an amazing SF director, and this book is a genre classic that needs to be adapted properly into cinematic form. The cast is great, and everything looks super promising for now. Let’s hope they don’t mess it up, and that we get a new great franchise out of this.

Honorable Mentions:

Tenet – I find Nolan’s movies hit-or-miss. The trailer for this one is admittedly quite good, and the concept is great. I just hope it turns out to be more ‘Interstellar’ than ‘Inception’.

SoulSoul is the second Pixar feature coming out this year, and it sounds too much like ‘Inside Out’, but still it can turn out to be great. We just have to wait and see.

The King’s ManThe second Kingsman movie wasn’t as good as the first, but it was still a lot of fun. This one is a prequel so it can breathe new life to the franchise.
