Top Ten Bonnie Tyler Songs

Bonnie Tyler is an iconic of rock music. In fact, she’s one of the best female rock singers of all time. A couple of her songs are iconic masterpieces of the genre, but this singer produced an output that is more than just those couple of unforgettable tunes. Here are ten of her best numbers with three honorable mentions.

10. My! My! Honeycomb

I adore the beginning of this song. It’s instantly catchy and fun. I would say that this song deserves more attention as it’s quite underrated. Yes, it’s not as deep as the rest on this list, but it’s among the breeziest, easiest and most entertaining of Tyler’s numbers and there should be a place for that as well.

9. Say Goodbye

Say Goodbye is such an underrated song by Bonnie Tyler that has a beautifully melancholic tone to it. It’s one of her saddest numbers, but also one of her most powerfully written and performed. There is just so much emotion imbued in each and every word sung here.

8. Don’t Turn Around

Another underappreciated effort, Don’t Turn Around is among the more fun Bonnie Tyler songs. It is baffling to me why this one isn’t more popular when it’s so beautiful, wonderfully written and fueled by a fantastic chorus that is quite timeless in quality.

7. If You Were a Woman

One of the most energetic and catchiest Bonnie Tyler songs, If You Were a Woman doesn’t have the deepest lyrics, but it’s such a fun, instantly memorable number that is different enough from the rest of her oeuvre that it needs to be respected for being quite authentic.

6. Loving You’s a Dirty Job

By far one of Tyler’s most ambitious efforts, this incredible number is one of my recent discoveries and I am glad that I’ve finally found out about it. The song is powerfully sung, almost operatic in quality and gorgeously composed throughout its long, but never felt length. It’s also a duet and a superb one at that.

5. Lost in France

It took me a while to start loving Lost in France, but when I did, I came to fully appreciate it for what it is, which is this gorgeous, highly romantic tune that paints a clear, nostalgic and beautiful picture with a lot of clarity and heart. It is also pleasantly reminiscent of Abba’s music.

4. Straight from the Heart

Straight from the Heart gets the fourth spot on my list for a variety of reasons. One is its timeless pop-rock sensibilities. It’s very classic and instantly reminiscent of the best that the eighties music had to offer. Tyler’s voice is beautiful as always, but it is the refrain that I just adore, especially the final repetition of the titular words through some amazing backup vocals.

3. Holding Out for a Hero

Undoubtedly Bonnie Tyler’s most iconic song that literally everybody on the face of the Earth has heard countless times, Holding Out for a Hero isn’t my favorite number of hers, which is clearly indicated by this placement here, but it’s undeniable that the song is fueled by incredible energy, an outstanding beat and very memorable, fun lyrics as well. It’s beautifully sung and very powerful, which is why it has stood the test of time gloriously.

2. It’s a Heartache

Who doesn’t love It’s a Heartache? This song just gets me every single time that I listen to it. It features incredibly sad, poignant lyrics that are perfectly sung by Tyler who imbued the words with a lot of love and emotion in her voice. It’s by far one of the most gorgeous of her numbers that is perfectly sung, composed and written in its entirety. It’s an easy second place for me.

1. Total Eclipse of the Heart

The best song that Bonnie Tyler has ever produced is without any doubt Total Eclipse of the Heart, which is also one of the best 80s songs out there, and that says a lot as that decade remains the best for all of music. The opening music is instantly iconic and then the voice coming in is even more powerful and stunning to behold. The lyrics are among the most emotionally charged of all the power ballads. This is the representation of everything that I liked most in this genre – the perfect mixture of rock guitar with the more beautiful lyrics and tone of the regular pop ballads. As a result, Total Eclipse of the Heart is an absolute masterpiece that gets me very sad every time I hear its closing words. It’s such a heartbreaking, masterful number.

Honorable Mentions:

If You Ever Need Me Again – This song isn’t particularly memorable at first, but it gets very nostalgic and melancholic in that powerful audio cue after the refrain.

More Than a Lover – This tune has a signature 70s tone to it that goes well with Tyler’s voice. It’s not quite as timeless, but it’s very fun and perfectly deserving of its spot in this section.

Blame Me – Not the most memorable of her songs, but still a perfectly solid tune that is particularly strong in its very well written lyrics.
