Best Films from January 2022:

3. Office Space

The nineties were a pretty bad decade for comedies, so Office Space easily ranks as one of the greatest and possibly the very best one. This is a sharp, very honest take on the horrors of office jobs that is meticulously detailed and oh so very funny. The staple gag is hilarious, the acting is terrific and the movie has a fantastic message as well. It’s a comedy classic.

2. Gunda

Gunda is very serene and endearing at first until it’s not. The last scene is so horrifying that it impacted me deeply. This is a nature documentary unlike no other. Not only is it very subtle in its message, but it’s also very timeless due to its black-and-white cinematography and a lack of score. It’s such a touching movie and the best documentary of the year.

1. Mass

Mass is the best movie of 2021. No other movie came even close to this one for me in terms of its sheer emotional power. I almost cried how heartbreaking the theme is and how well they treated it. The dialogue is impressive while the acting performances are outstanding across the board with Ann Dowd being the standout. The movie’s directing and editing are also incredible while the treatment of its central themes was very sophisticated. It’s a perfect drama for sure.

3. Taking Woodstock

Taking Woodstock is one of the worst Ang Lee movies that I’ve seen. It’s just pointless. Nothing here made it seem worthy of the material ever being worthy of a cinematic treatment. In particular, its meandering pace and no proper characterization really bothered me.

2. Holy Motors

Holy Motors is one of those arty movies that give international cinema a bad name. it has its memorably sequences, but for the most part it’s a total bore that also has no plot or message to it whatsoever. It’s cinematic, but literally empty.

1. V/H/S: Viral

The worst movie I saw this month has to be the third entry in this found footage franchise. Some moments are fine as are a couple of the segments, but most are forgettable and the movie is even weaker than its admittedly not great predecessors.
