After losing his friend, top pilot Maverick is given a second chance to redeem himself. He struggles to be at his best and also gets romantically involved with his civilian instructor Charlie. There is a lot to dislike here, which is exactly what I did. I hated this film. I’d expected it to be bad, so that is why I wasn’t burnt on it, but still it’s a total waste of time watching this movie nowadays as it’s only meant to be enjoyed by the biased nostalgic fans.
What about the plot? Well, it’s nowhere to be found. The training is only an excuse for the action scenes while the romance is absolutely atrocious. I actually like Tom Cruise. I found him pretty good in most of his movies and he usually chose to be in some truly great features, but this is a huge exception. His role here is so terrible that it just might be his career-worst.
I simply could not take him seriously posing, acting cool and trying to be sexy every single second. The character is so off-puttingly arrogant and Cruise himself becomes unlikable in the role. And McGillis falling head over hills for him to the point that she couldn’t articulate herself? That was absolutely ridiculous and just plain laughable. Every single sequence with these two was meant to be big and romantic, but they all failed miserably, and the result is a lot of corny dialogue and stupid, overly sexualized moments.
Top Gun also has many terrible lines of dialogue that have become quite popular over the years, but are the epitome of everything that was bad in the eighties, which is the cheesiness of it all. The dogfights were very well executed, I will give them that. The action overall is stellar, the movie is well made, it’s quite cinematic and the soundtrack is of course iconic with the Oscar winner Take My Breath Away stealing the show. But even that great song could not save this movie from being annoying and dated.

So I saw the first one on Sunday, and the second one yesterday. I thought the first one was a pretty fun movie, but it really is not a good one. I found the movie to be quite charming, because it was very 80s, however there are other movies and shows that could satisfy those needs(ex. Cheers, Moonlighting, ET, I guess anything from the 80s). Yeah, I feel like this should have been a stand alone movie, and did not need…
The second one on the other hand(Top Gun Maverick) I thought was absolute garbage. To me it just seemed like a pale imitation of the first one. It was the same movie, without the charm and feeling the other one had, and was instead felt like a generic action movie. Top Gun does not need a sequel in my opinion, because the first one seems more like a feel-good-sentimental movie, and not a work of art like Gone With The Wind or Citizen Kane.
That’s interesting. I am not planning to watch the second one soon, but I am hearing from most people that it is much better than the original, but I believe the reality is that it’s even worse just as you said. There was no need for it, but it brought back older viewers nostalgic for the first movie to the theaters, so that’s why they brought it back.
