There’s Something About Mary is a 1998 romantic comedy film directed by the Farrelly brothers and starring Cameron Diaz and Ben Stiller. It’s a very cartoony, ridiculous flick.

Ted, a geek, attempts to track down his high-school sweetheart Mary and hires a private detective to know her whereabouts. He soon realizes that he has to compete with other men in order to impress her. The movie’s first half was at least somewhat believable, but unfortunately the second half became too ridiculous for me as they introduced even more men into the picture, resulting in utter lunacy.

This is one of those movies that so glorify its central female star/protagonist, but I personally never really got why all of these men were so obsessed with her. Yes, Cameron Diaz looks beautiful in this movie, and she actually delivered a pretty solid performance as well, but Mary is still an idiot. She is so dumb to the point of being implausible.

I did like Ben Stiller here, though this is his typical role that he played so many times throughout his career. They are a solid couple, playful and charming, and the scenes between the two are consistently sweet. As for Matt Dillon, he is believable as this crazy, manipulative, lying jerk, and some of his lies were the funniest moments in the movie. Others are forgettable with Tucker being super annoying.

There’s Something About Mary is a strange movie that could never be made today. I am of course talking about its very politically incorrect humor. The movie goes after dogs in brutal fashion, and a lot of the jokes surrounding gays, women and especially disabled people were somewhat amusing, but definitely dated. I respected the movie for going to the extreme, but in my opinion its more subtle jokes worked better.

As for those crazy graphic scenes, they were also too crazy, but admittedly extremely memorable. The zipper scene is too uncomfortable, but definitely entertaining, and the cum as gel scene is the film’s most iconic, grossest moment. The movie is definitely fun, but it still felt overlong with the second half making me lose my interest a bit, not to mention that the plot became ridiculous in that section.

There’s Something About Mary is a surprisingly entertaining, at times even very funny movie. Its humor is offensive and also very graphic, resulting in some truly memorable scenes. However, the film’s second half became way too messy in plot by introducing too many chasing men, the protagonist is also too dumb and the movie is overlong and increasingly silly and implausible.
