The Miseducation of Cameron Post is a 2018 teen drama film directed by Desiree Akhavan and starring Chloe Grace Moretz. It’s a pretty good drama.

It follows a young lesbian girl who is sent off to a gay conversion therapy center to cure her from her “sins”. This is one of the two conversation therapy movies released this year and it showcases bluntly how ridiculous that concept really is. The movie is too simplistic and straightforward in its approach for sure, but it’s also effective in making the audience feel empathy toward its characters without ever being overly emotionally manipulative and thankfully not preachy at all.

Chloe Grace Moretz is actually stupendous in the main role. She is easy to relate to and she gave a believable, subtle performance. Her two friends make for a strong, likable trio of characters and the conversation therapy center people in charge are subtly ridiculed, but also showed how smartly manipulative they are at using “science” and psychology to destroy these easily influenced, fractured teenage minds.

The Miseducation of Cameron Post is at its best with the trio goofing around and conversing. I also loved the ending as it was very fulfilling emotionally speaking and quite wonderful. The film presents a problem of having too many characters and thus definitely not all of them make an impact, but some certainly do with Mark being a particularly tragic figure.

Let’s talk about the biggest problem of this movie which is easily its runtime. It’s simply way too short and thus both the characterization and the story’s impact suffered as a result. Both were blunted and that was entirely unnecessary as at least two scenes could have easily been added to prevent that from happening.

But it’s well scored and definitely well acted across the board. It’s simplistic for better and for worse, but it features particularly strong dialogue with many impactful conversations to be had here. The film is also quite sophisticated when you think about it as it avoids the pitfall of portraying the center people as cartoony villains and instead portrays them realistically.

The Miseducation of Cameron Post is simplistic and straightforward sometimes to its detriment plus the runtime is way too short, but the acting is strong across the board with Chloe Grace Moretz delivering a stupendous performance, the dialogue is excellent and the approach in telling its story is more sophisticated than emotionally manipulative or plain preachy.

My Rating – 4
