The Hep Cat Review

The Hep Cat is a 1942 animated short film from the Looney Tunes series. It is a solid parody flick.

It follows a male cat who falls in love with a female cat who’s fiercely protected by a dog who chases the cat throughout the cartoon. Yes, the film has the appearances of some famous celebrities from its time, but it’s for the most part a straight parody of ‘Solid Serenade’ which is the third best Tom & Jerry short. I do not understand how nobody on the internet got that connection besides me, but I certainly saw it and I found it pretty amusing.

Although it can be funny seeing that famous cartoon parodied, they didn’t go too far with it and it mostly ended up being a remake/rehash which was uninspired from them. I liked the cat quite a bit and especially his voice while the dog and the love interest are forgettable. This short is famous for being the first color Looney Tunes entry which is interesting, but it doesn’t have any recurring characters in it so I personally would consider it to be a Merry Melody.

But anyway, The Hep Cat is a fun parody with some funny moments, but it needed more humor and a better script.
