The Candid Candidate Review

The Candid Candidate Review

The Candid Candidate is a 1937 animated short film from the Betty Boop series. It is a pretty solid cartoon.

Betty Boop campaigns for Grampy to be the new mayor and he wins. As soon as he takes office, the citizens come out from everywhere to complain and to demand he fix things. Grampy is in his element. This movie is very similar to that earlier short when Betty was president herself. It’s not as strong as that movie because it was too familiar and forgettable.

Grampy is great as he always is. I loved some of the inventive ways that he used to help people throughout the cartoon. The animation is just as gorgeous and technically polished as ever. Betty is also very endearing here and it was great that she was the one helping him in return. But the usual formula where Grampy uses his inventions to help Betty is better than this one.

The Candidate Candidate does benefit from memorable Betty and Grampy, but the plot and humor left a lot to be desired.

My Rating – 3.6
