Ding Dong Doggie Review

Ding Dong Doggie Review

Ding Dong Doggie is a 1937 animated short film from the Betty Boop series. It is a pretty solid cartoon.

Against Betty Boop’s orders, Pudgy the Pup accompanies a Dalmatian fire dog to a fire. There, he is trapped inside a burning house and he has to escape from the fire that literally comes alive. The second half of this movie is very inventive. This is where we see some innovative animation with the fire becoming little fire people chasing Pudgy around. All of those gags worked and were phenomenal.

The rest of the short is less memorable. Betty spanking Pudgy was repeated from previous shorts and the whole setup was similar. The Dalmatian dog was underutilized too. But the movie succeeds despite its familiar trappings because of that crazy animation and memorable scenarios. Pudgy always getting himself in trouble continues to be hilarious.

Ding Dong Doggie has a familiar premise, but the execution is excellent. The second half featured some very inventive animation and gags.

My Rating – 3.8
