The Angry Birds Movie 2 Movie Review

The Angry Birds Movie 2 is a 2019 animated action comedy film directed by Thurop Van Orman and coming from Sony Animation and Rovio Animation. It’s a solid improvement upon the original.

The birds are surprised when a green pig suggests that they put aside their differences and unite to fight a common threat. Aggressive birds from an island covered in ice are planning to use an elaborate weapon to destroy the fowl and swine way of life. After picking their best and brightest, the birds and pigs come up with a scheme to infiltrate the island, deactivate the device and return to their respective paradises intact.

The story is better than in the first movie. Again, there is nothing here sophisticated in terms of the themes. Well, we’ve got a feminist subplot, but that one is handled so unsubtly that it annoyed me more than it made the film clever. They should have approached it much better than they had in the end.

But the spy/heist elements in the action in the second half really made it very entertaining, even more so than that excellent storming the city sequence in the first movie. The action here is really terrific across the board, and though excessive of course, it’s at least more fun than annoying which is more than you can ask for this type of movie.

I liked the characters as well, and I found them better developed here, though only slightly. Red is underutilized this time around, but still quite good. Chuck is actually much funnier here, and the same goes for Bomb. As for Zeta, she is such an awkward feminist villain who did not work for me, and Silver herself is solid, but again mostly there to just make a point about women.

The Angry Birds Movie 2 once again benefits from terrific animation, strong action and sometimes quite inspired visuals, especially of the water, ice and the various tech displayed. I also really liked how the world was enlarged here, and how the pigs and the birds worked together. But too many characters and subplots made it messy and underdeveloped overall. And the score is once again annoying in the pop tunes that fit the emotions on screen too obviously.

The Angry Birds Movie 2 is still messy and underdeveloped in its many subplots and characters. Its female empowerment theme is also ridiculously unsubtle. But the action is once again terrific and the same goes for the animation. The humor is solid and less vulgar this time around while the characters themselves are also slightly better. Thus, it’s a solid improvement upon its predecessor.

My Rating – 3.5
