The Angry Birds Movie Movie Review

The Angry Birds Movie is a 2016 animated action comedy film from Rovio Animation. It is what you would expect – a passable, fun entertainment that doesn’t have much in its mind.

Something about those pigs isn’t kosher

Red, Chuck and Bomb have always been the outcasts within a community of flightless birds on an island. But when mysterious green pigs intrude the island, it is up to them to figure out the reason. So obviously being based on a very famous Android video game, the movie doesn’t really have that much of a strong plot in it. It’s not too slim, but still it needed more.

The first act touched on anger issues and anger management in such a promising manner, but eventually the movie unfortunately totally abandoned that theme, and settled on these pigs and the action of it all which was super disappointing, though admittedly fun.

Yes, this flick is very entertaining in some spots. Certainly the action is very overwhelming and by the end it does become a bit dull, but that whole extended sequence with the birds being catapulted into the pigs’ fortress really reminded me of the game itself in a pleasant way. It felt like playing a video game in its very well executed, highly entertaining action and scenarios.

I did really like Red. Jason Sudeikis was so well cast in this role, and the character’s anger produces a lot of amusing situations. But others aren’t as memorable with Chuck and Bomb being the regular sidekicks in these cartoons. But I did find the judge character hilarious, though the eagle has such a typical, predictable arc from beginning to end.

The animation is actually very good, pleasantly cartoony and with wonderfully goofy character designs. The birds looked great, and some of the settings are very memorable too. It’s a very pleasant movie, but it is especially intended for children who may love it to pieces, but to adults it is just fun, but brainless. The score is overly modern, the pacing is totally off and the overall direction and storytelling are weak. The humor is sometimes very strong, but often terrible with very ill-advised pee jokes that border on downright disgusting.

The Angry Birds Movie can be funny at times, but it can also often be disgusting with its very ill-advised toilet humor. The animation and especially character designs are goofy and fun while the video-game inspired action is wildly entertaining in some scenes. But the storytelling and direction are so weak, and the film is ultimately fun and passable, but brainless entertainment.

My Rating – 3
